Getting Just the Right Size for Your Engagement Ring

Rings are jewelry items that do not leave a lot of room for error in the sizing department. A ring needs to be able to fit over your knuckle but not so big that it slides around on your finger. When choosing the perfect engagement ring, sizing is just one more thing to consider so that it sits just right on your or your partner’s hand.

Not too Big, Not too Small

It really is worth the time to get this part of the ring purchase correct. There are plenty of ways to get an accurate sizing either with your partner in store or by sneaking around to get this important info.

  1. Go to your local jeweler. This is the most reliable way to get a size because all U.S. jewelers use the same standard sizing.
  2. Use a plastic ring sizer. This way works well as you can simply order one and reuse it at home.
  3. Use a printable size chart. You can print one out from a jewelry website that you trust, take a ring you know that fits well and hold it up to the circle it matches best. This method is good if you are secretly trying to get your partner’s sizing and can use a ring they already wear. Pro tip: the inner edge of the circle on the paper should be just visible inside your ring.

Tips for Successful Sizing

You know you found the right size when the ring feels snug on your finger but loose enough to get over the knuckle. Measuring a finger is fairly straightforward, but there are a few tips that can make this process easier and even more accurate.

  • Get sized at the right time when your finger is at its average size. Avoid sizing when your fingers are swollen from working out or in hot weather. Inversely, don’t do it when it’s very cold and your fingers are slightly smaller. Try to get sized when your body is at its normal temperature.
  • The same finger may be slightly different from one hand to the other. For example, your right ring finger can be slightly larger than your left so make sure you size the exact finger you need fitted.
  • Diet can also affect your ring size. Salty foods and alcohol can result in roughly a half-size increase so wait to binge until after you have your magic number.
  • Wider bands can be harder to slide over your knuckle so you may need to go up a half size for a wide setting.
  • If you are in between sizes or have any doubts, go up a half-size.
  • If you are wondering if men have a different ring scale, they don’t. Both genders use the same ring sizing to make it simple.

What if after all this the size is still wrong? Don’t panic! Most reputable jewelers offer complimentary resizing and it’s a simple process. However, there are a few types of rings that are not easy to resize. Eternity bands with gemstones all around are more difficult and expensive to resize. Some alternative metals like Tungsten, cannot be resized because of the strength of the metal.

If you follow these steps, your ring should arrive ready for the big ask! Once the size is right and the ring is perfect, the next call you should make is for jewelry insurance to be sure this ring truly does last a lifetime! Contact Lavalier right away for a free, personalized insurance quote.
