Planning a wedding is a process that doesn’t need to start the second you say YES! Take a moment to enjoy and assess your new engagement before figuring out the answers to ‘What now?’.
There is no specific schedule to follow but knowing the process ahead of you can be daunting and leave you feeling a bit overwhelmed with where to begin. (And definitely do not go straight to Pinterest!) Don’t worry as there is plenty of time to make all of your intricate to-do list items. So for now, let’s just start with the top 5 major tasks.
I’m Engaged! Now What?
- Enjoy the Moment
This is the perfect time to get a manicure before you start showing off your beautiful bauble. This is such a short window of time, but oh so memorable. It will go fast so enjoy it! Take time to simple BE engaged without thinking about the actual wedding. Soak it in and even consider a trip together or just enjoy time one-on-one before life and plans gets hectic. - Declare the News
Take as much or as little time as you want before you start spreading the news of your engagement. Be sure all the VIPs – family and close friends – are told first then you can start plotting out your social media post to alert the rest of the world. - Insure the Ring
Honestly, getting insurance should actually be job one as soon as it’s on your finger. The ring is most likely now your most prized possession, so treat it as such and insure it against theft, loss or damage. This is especially important as you are getting used to it, needing it resized, passing it around to friends, and even wearing it on your honeymoon. - Talk to Your Fiancé
Communicate to each other before you start talking to others about your wedding plans. Decide what makes sense for you as couple and answer questions together, such as: what is our timeline, do we want a short or long engagement, do we have a favorite wedding season, and should this be a big or small event. - Get Organized
Decide on an app that fits your lifestyle and needs. There are plenty to choose from and they can help keep everything in one place like vendors, your registry, budgets, and even RSVPs. If you like paper and pen, create a binder too for copies of receipts and contracts. If you start out organized the whole process will go that much smoother.
Once these early tasks are complete, you’ll be ready to dive in to the serious planning when the time is right. Figuring out what works for you as a couple and how you want to take these first steps together will get your journey started off on the right foot.
