Ear piercing has been around for thousands of years, so it’s not only common but safe as well. If you are thinking of adding a new piercing for yourself or if you have a child begging for their first pair of earrings, check out our tips for a perfect piercing experience.
Before the Pierce
The first decision to make is location – for the piercing that is. There are a few options for an ear piercing:
- Earlobe – This is the common go-to spot on the ear. It is easy to care for and it heals quickly.
- Helix – This curvy tissue at the top of the ear heals a little slower than the lobe but is still easy to keep clean.
- Tragus – It is above the ear lobe and on the edge of the face. It is the least common and a little more difficult to care for.
Now that you have your prime ear spot selected, next is all about the piercer. If you don’t already have someone or somewhere in mind, look for:
- A reputable shop – Check for good online reviews and if they specialize in piercings. Consider a tattoo shop as they are highly regulated by health agencies.
- Make sure they have licensed piercers on staff.
- Safety precautions – ask about and look for medical-grade gloves and sterile needles
- Choose places that use needles – It can be hard to sterilize all the part of a piercing “gun” while a needle is completely sterile. A needle also gives more accuracy.
Aftercare To-Do List
You should have very little trouble with your new piercing if you follow a few simple care and cleaning tips:
- Clean it two times daily with soap and water or a saline solution. Even though some places may recommend rubbing alcohol, it can dry out skin causing cracking and eventually could lead to pain, inflammation and infection.
- Leave the earrings in for at least the first six weeks.
- It can take a couple of months to fully heal so avoid activities that could bump or snag the new earring.
Once everything has healed and you are ready to swap out your starter pair for some new beautiful sparklers, enjoy all the ways you now have to express yourself. The sky is the limit when it comes to the aesthetics new earrings can bring. Contact Lavalier once you start to splurge and need some peace of mind for any new baubles.
