How to Care for Your Jewelry in the Summer

Showing off your unique accessory style in the summer is a fun way to let your personality shine during these sunny months. But the heat, humidity, sand and sun lotions can make this season particularly tricky when it comes to caring for your precious metals and shimmering gemstones.

Tips and Tricks

Not only do people enjoy all things water-related in summer, but it’s a time of travel including beach holidays. Follow these ‘Do’s & Don’ts’ to make sure your jewelry is still looking its best by the end of this event-filled season!

  1. Avoid wearing jewelry in the water. Whether it’s chlorine or salt water, both can damage the stones in your pieces. They can actually eat away at the metal alloys causing it to look tarnished. Plus, if you are wearing a loose ring, the cold water can create an even looser fit and cause it to fall off. The easiest way to ruin a vacation, honeymoon, or just a fun pool day is with a lost wedding ring.
  2. Store your pieces in a cool, dry environment as the heat and humidity can cause tarnishing and cause your gems to become dull.
  3. Clean your jewelry regularly. This is especially important during summer as sweat, sunscreen and lotions can find their way onto the pieces you wear regularly. You can wipe them down after a day of fun or even clean your jewelry with a mix of lukewarm water and dishwashing soap.
  4. Take off your jewelry for bedtime. This is a good time to take off your pieces and wipe them with a soft cloth (to remove any oils from your day). Sleeping in your jewelry can also wear down the settings resulting in loose stones. Having a jewelry tray by your bed is a good visual cue to remind you, and you can put them all back on first thing when you open your eyes.
  5. Remove your jewelry before hitting the beach as pieces of sand can get stuck in your settings and stones.
  6. Have your jewelry professionally inspected. Many jewelers recommend bringing it into their store every six months. It is a quick process that has so many benefits. (They can find loose prongs and repair them before it turns into a lost diamond!) You may consider having this done after a vacation or at the end of summer once all your sand and sun adventures are complete.

You can still enjoy this sunny season while wearing your jewelry with confidence! When summer is in full swing and your social calendar is full, thinking of your jewelry might not be the top priority. However, if you follow these simple steps, your timeless treasures can stay in tip-top shape. As you take special care for your jewels this season, don’t forget the most important way to protect your pieces is through specialized jewelry insurance. Contact Lavalier today for your quote!
