Have New Jewelry from the Holidays? Learn Proper Care to Keep it Shining!

Did you find something sparkly under the tree this year? Keep it shiny and bright by taking good care of your new present; follow these tips for everything from cleaning to storage.

Top 7 Tips

Whether it’s your first piece of fine jewelry or your fiftieth, it is important to know proper care techniques as this is something you will be treasuring for years to come. And you want it looking as good as the day you unwrapped it.

  1. Safely Store
No matter how careful you are when wearing your jewelry, you need to also be careful during storage. This may seem surprising but damage can come from pieces getting knocked together or tangled. Be sure to keep jewelry separate when stored. You may consider separate cloth pouches or even individual jewelry cases for the most valuable pieces.
  2. Proper Care
Make sure your jewelry is the last thing you put on so that it stays free from damaging chemicals, hair products and perfumes. Then, at night, be sure to take it off before putting on lotions and creams. These may not necessarily damage your jewelry but it can cause buildup leading to more cleaning needs.
  3. Insure It
Before the decorations of the season have come down be sure to get a personalized jewelry quote. Many don’t realize that homeowner’s policies often do not cover the full cost of your precious jewels. Plus, you want your new piece to be protected right away from loss, theft or damage.
  4. Travel Tip
Be sure to take a jewelry travel case on your next getaway to keep them safe and free from tangles.
  5. Cleaning Supply Conundrums
The chemicals we use to clean our home can damage metals and gems so be sure to remove your jewelry before scrubbing so that your pieces will stay as sparkly as your clean home!
  6. Educate Yourself
Learn about your specific gemstone or precious metal so that you can be sure to clean it correctly. Many pieces (especially rings which often collect the most dirt) can be cleaned at home with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Rub gently with a cloth or soft toothbrush and allow to dry thoroughly. If unsure definitely ask your jeweler as you wouldn’t want to damage a softer stone or pearls, which can require a different cleaning method.
  7. Find a Pro
Take your jewelry in to your favorite local jeweler for regular cleanings and inspections. They can catch a potential problem and keep your new sparkler shining bright.
